Paper & Play
Paper & Play is a mixed media lesson rooted in playful exploration and material curiosity. In this class, we begin by gathering a variety of papers and transforming them through personal mark-making and a limited color palette, allowing experimentation and discovery to guide the process rather than a fixed outcome.
From there, we’ll play with assembling a small, non-representational abstract collage, focusing on how shapes, layers, and textures interact as they come together. The process emphasizes responding to what emerges, inviting a sense of openness and freedom into the work.
As the composition develops, we’ll begin making more intentional decisions about balance, repetition, and visual relationships within the piece. Through this process, the collage evolves from playful experimentation toward a cohesive and thoughtfully resolved work of art.
This lesson encourages artists to approach collage as a space for play, curiosity, and risk-taking, while still arriving at a final piece that feels intentional and complete.

Whispers: Creating Deep Art From Quiet Inspiration
Join Holly in creating moody mixed-media pieces in your art journal.
While we will experiment with a range of supplies, the focus of this class will mostly be how to use water-soluble graphite. We’ll take a basic look into grayscale and learn how to use limited supplies to create a range of values. We’ll develop a collection of symbols and personal marks, design our own handmade fodder for collage, explore ways to create atmospheric texture and mood, and play with loose lines to draw expressive figures intuitively. Finally, moving into our art journals, we will infuse what we’ve learned and created into finished pieces with expressive figures, texture, atmosphere and symbolism.
This workshop encourages you to learn how to create from your own sources of inspiration, through your own creative process, and in your own style. You will learn ways to help you connect more deeply with your process and your unique visual language.

Emerge: Painting the Creative Unknown
Holly will guide you through her creative process, sharing with you how she engages in a conversation between her inner voice and the painting. Through listening and responding, deep expression can emerge. For each piece that we complete, we’ll explore our own unique creative language and discover what visual narrative it may begin to reveal.
This mixed media workshop encourages you to learn how to create from your own intuition, through your own process, and in your own style. You will learn ways to help you connect more deeply with your own creative process and your own visual language.

About Holly McLaughlin
Holly is a mixed media artist living in North Carolina, USA, with her husband, their son, and their beloved animals—two dogs, two cats, a leopard gecko, and several fish. By day, Holly works as a Pediatric Speech-Language Pathologist in early intervention, but when she’s not working or painting, Holly enjoys spending time with her family, reading, watching movies, and connecting with nature.
In her art, Holly focuses on creating minimal abstracts with handmade and vintage collage elements, often incorporating texture, personal mark-making and a neutral color palette that emphasizes the quiet beauty and struggle of everyday moments.
