✨ The Abstract Playground Is Here ✨

Hi dear Creative Friend, 👋

A little confession. 😊

I’ve spent eighteen years teaching people to paint faces and animals, and abstract art still used to properly intimidate me.

Give me a face and I’m away. Give me a blank page with nothing to hold onto and I’d freeze. 😅

How do you know what to put where? How do you stop it turning into a muddy soup? What actually makes an abstract piece work, rather than just being colours on paper?

What I eventually found is that there are principles sitting underneath the play. And once you know them, the playing gets braver and far more fun.

So I’ve made you a little class about it. 🌈

The Abstract Playground is about four hours of loosening up: colour, shapes, layers, marks, splatters, scribbles and an unreasonable number of dots. 😂

We’ll make a warm painting first, all oranges and magentas and pops of turquoise. Then a cool one in blues, teals and ochres. Then a playful abstract grid. Then I’ve added some bonus videos so you can watch the same ideas get reshuffled into completely different paintings, because that’s the whole point of a playground. 😊

No faces. No figures. Nothing to get “right”.

I’m not the only one who finds the blank page frightening. But here’s what one of my students said happens next:
