A Year of Magic & Fairy Tales is a year-long, immersive mixed media art course exploring the enchanting worlds of magic, myth, and story. Hosted by renowned artist and author Tamara Laporte from Willowing Arts, and joined by 30 inspiring guest artists, this course invites you to embark on a magical creative adventure. Together, we’ll dive deeply into the art of fairy tales, exploring how story, imagination, magic and wonder can transform both your artwork and your inner world.

How are you today friends? Here it’s raining and raining and raining so much that there are floods in the little village I live near! I’m in full on hunkering down mode with warm clothes and blankets while prepping my sessions for A Year of Magic & Fairy Tales. 🧚✨🦄 It’s always so interesting to me to see the prototype next to the lesson version. I never used quite the same colours/ materials and it provides unexpected interesting twists! This is called ‘Wish Upon A Star’ and we plant the seeds for our wishes/ hopes/ intentions for the year in the ground she stands on. 😊 How are you? Sending love. ♥️♥️♥️
I’m so excited to share this new magical character with you! Here is my take on the Fairy Godmother archetype. She feels like a wise, starry grandmother who carries whole galaxies of kindness in her eyes. ✨
I realised I haven’t painted many older faces before, I didn`t always feel good at them and so creating her was a bit of a challenge and it also felt surprisingly moving. There can be so much beauty in the softness of older faces; the lines, the life lived. I wanted her to feel powerful, warm, and full of that gentle, cosmic “you’re safe with me, darling” energy. Like so many of our own beautiful grandmas made us feel.
It made me think about how rarely we see older women portrayed as magical, radiant, enchanting … and how deeply needed that is (Hello society erasing older women!). So here she is in all her twinkly glory. 🌙💫 How did I do? 😊
She’ll be part of our big creative journey in A Year of Magic & Fairy Tales, and I can’t wait to guide you through painting her step by step.
